A Paris Saint-Germain supporter tragically drowned in the River Seine while celebrating the team’s victory over Arsenal. The incident marked the second fatality during a chaotic weekend, with the man being discovered near the Louis-Philippe Bridge close to Notre Dame Cathedral on Sunday.
His demise occurred amidst a wave of violence following PSG’s successful defense of their Champions League title against the London club, resulting in the arrest of 790 individuals. River police retrieved the man’s body early on Sunday morning, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
According to reports, the man, in his 30s, had been heavily intoxicated before leaping into the river in jubilation over PSG’s win. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident and are urging witnesses in the vicinity at the time to come forward with any pertinent information.
Another individual who also entered the river on the same day is currently in critical condition at a Paris hospital. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, the person suffered a cardiac arrest and remains in a precarious state.
In a separate incident, an unidentified 23-year-old motorcyclist lost his life after colliding with a concrete block on the Paris ring road. Celebrating PSG fans had removed safety cones around the obstacle, leading to the fatal accident.
Prosecutors have launched an inquiry into an attempted murder after a 17-year-old male was repeatedly stabbed near the Champs Élysée. The victim, who fell into a coma, is under intensive care, while the attackers are being pursued and face charges of attempted murder.
The unrest extended beyond Paris, with reports of looting, arson, and violence in various cities, prompting a significant police deployment to maintain order. Tear gas and baton charges were employed in Paris, where approximately 8000 officers were on duty to address the disturbances.
