Rescuers have located the remains of four Italian divers who went missing in the Maldives, yet uncertainties linger over the tragic incidents. Five Italian divers are presumed to have perished while exploring a cave at a depth of around 50 meters (160 feet) in Vaavu Atoll on Thursday, as per the Italian ministry. Following the distress call, a search operation ensued but was halted after a local military diver lost his life during a risky attempt to reach them.
The bodies of the four divers were found four days after their disappearance, with the fifth diver, a diving instructor, discovered earlier outside the cave. The government of the Maldives confirmed that Finnish diving experts, along with local police and military personnel, located the bodies deep inside the cave. It remains unclear why the divers were discovered at a depth exceeding the legal limit for recreational diving in the Maldives.
Maldives presidential spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef stated that the reasons behind the divers venturing into a cave well below the legal depth limit are still unknown. Investigators have initiated a probe into the tragic deaths to determine the causes of the five Italian divers’ demise. Ahmed Shaam, a spokesman for the Maldives government, provided an update on the somber findings.
Shaam revealed that the bodies were found deep inside the cave, clustered together in the third segment of the cave system. Plans are in place to recover two bodies the next day and potentially retrieve the remaining two bodies the following day. The victims were identified in Italian media reports as university professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, Muriel Oddenino from Turin, Gianluca Benedetti from Padua, and Federico Gualtieri from Borgomanero.
Earlier, Maldives presidential spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef mentioned that the search operation was halted after a member of the Maldivian national defence force, Mohamed Mahudhee, succumbed to underwater decompression sickness. Inclement weather conditions had repeatedly disrupted the rescue efforts, with initial teams marking the entrance to the cave system where the Italian divers went missing.
