“Jeweller Sentenced to Life for Neighbor’s Murder”

Date:

A man from north Wales, who used to work as a jeweller, has been sentenced to prison for killing his neighbor in a dispute over noise. James Hughes, aged 67, attacked Harold Turner, aged 68, with a walking stick and sat on him during a confrontation at their housing complex in St Asaph on December 25, 2025.

Despite denying the charges, Hughes was found guilty of murder by a jury. Evidence presented during the trial included audio recordings from a dictaphone carried by Hughes for self-protection. The incident led to Hughes being sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 13 years, at Caernarfon Crown Court. He had spent 185 days in custody awaiting trial, which will be deducted from his sentence.

The court learned that the two men lived next to each other at the Old Palace retirement flats and had a history of disputes, mainly regarding noise disturbances allegedly caused by Hughes. According to witness accounts, Mr. Turner had expressed anger and distress towards Hughes on the day of the incident.

Judge Matthew Nicklin mentioned a series of threatening behaviors from Mr. Turner leading up to the fatal altercation, including voicemails and confrontations. The court concluded that the physical altercation was initiated by Mr. Turner, and Hughes responded in a manner deemed excessive and unreasonable. The key evidence was a dictaphone recording capturing Mr. Turner’s distress during the incident.

After the incident, Hughes returned to his flat, where he called his nephew and expressed concerns about the outcome of the altercation. Despite initially downplaying the severity of the situation, Hughes later admitted to hitting Mr. Turner with his stick, leading to fatal consequences.

In defense of Hughes, his lawyer highlighted his client’s previous traumatic experiences and poor health as contributing factors to the tragic event. However, the judge emphasized that the murder was not premeditated but condemned Hughes’ lack of empathy and disregard for Mr. Turner’s pleas for help.

Detective Chief Inspector Eleri Thomas described the incident as a senseless murder arising from a longstanding dispute between the two neighbors. She emphasized the role of Hughes in escalating the situation and causing the fatal confrontation. Thomas expressed hope that the legal proceedings brought some closure and justice to Mr. Turner’s grieving family.
