During a recent visit to an army barracks, the King demonstrated his ability to operate an air defence missile launcher, impressing troops who commended his proficiency with the equipment. The King was observed using the aiming unit of the launcher while positioned under a camouflage net alongside soldiers at Baker Barracks on Thorney Island in Hampshire.

Lieutenant Colonel Maarten Magee expressed his honor in showcasing the equipment to the King, emphasizing its role in neutralizing enemy threats like drones and helicopters. The Colonel mentioned that the King showed a keen interest in the military’s approach to modern challenges, labeling the visit as a unique experience for both the regiment and the island.

In his capacity as the Captain General of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, the King engaged with the 7th Air Defence Group Royal Artillery units during his inaugural visit to the military site. Upon arrival by helicopter, he was greeted with a 21-gun salute by the 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery.

Additionally, the King interacted with military personnel stationed in various locations globally through a video link, connecting with families present at the barracks. One young girl, Poppy, handed the King a letter expressing gratitude for his support to the military families.

The King’s interactions extended to families facing deployment challenges, as he acknowledged the hardships they endure while their loved ones serve abroad. The King’s visit was characterized by a warm and supportive atmosphere, fostering a sense of community among the military families.

Established in 1716, the Gunners have a distinguished history, earning the Battle Honour Ubique, symbolizing their presence in all conflicts involving the British Army. As the ceremonial head of the Royal Artillery since August 11, 2023, the King continues a tradition held by previous monarchs, overseeing a composition of 14 regular regiments and seven reserve regiments.
