A man has been sentenced to seven years and six months in prison for his involvement in encouraging the sexual abuse of a baby and an eight-year-old child. Mark Craig, 56, exchanged explicit messages discussing the abuse of children with an individual he thought had access to young girls, including a baby. Unbeknownst to him, the person he was communicating with was an undercover police officer conducting an investigation.
Following a meticulous police operation by officers from the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU), Craig was arrested and charged with several offenses related to child sexual exploitation. He pleaded guilty to arranging/facilitating the commission of a child sex offense, producing and distributing indecent images of children.
Craig, residing in the Westerhope area of Newcastle, appeared in court and received his sentence. NEROCU Detective Inspector Hull commended the diligent work of the officers in apprehending a dangerous predator who posed a significant risk to children. The investigation was part of Operation Sentinel, a regional initiative to combat serious and organized crimes, particularly targeting online offenses to protect children.
If you suspect child abuse or need to report a crime, contact your local police force or call 101. In emergencies, dial 999. Alternatively, you can provide information anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
