The significant development of a Labour MP’s partner being arrested on suspicion of espionage for China has been disclosed. According to reports, the individual is one of three individuals detained by the Metropolitan Police. The second person in custody is purportedly the partner of a former Labour MP. These arrests were made in coordinated operations in London and Wales earlier today.
During a session in the Commons, Security Minister Dan Jarvis confirmed the connection to China and highlighted the issue of foreign interference targeting UK democracy. He emphasized the importance of refraining from commenting further to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation or prejudicing legal proceedings.
In response to inquiries from Tory frontbencher Alex Burghart regarding the identities of those arrested, the Security Minister acknowledged the limitations on what he could disclose but assured that the matter was being taken seriously.
Jarvis warned of severe consequences if evidence proves Chinese attempts to interfere with UK sovereign affairs. He underscored the government’s commitment to safeguarding democratic institutions and processes from such threats, citing the effectiveness of the National Security Act in empowering intelligence agencies and law enforcement to combat state threats.
Regarding parliamentary access, it was clarified that the arrested individual did not possess a pass for the parliamentary estate. Concerns were raised about potential access to Parliament, prompting a response from the Security Minister emphasizing the urgency of providing updates without delving into operational specifics.
Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrests of three men suspected of spying for China, aged 39, 43, and 68, by counter-terrorism officers in London and Wales. The individuals were accused of aiding a foreign intelligence service and are currently in custody, with searches conducted at their respective residences.
