According to a statement made to ministers, online ‘mega-brothels’ that offer sexual services are being described as “crime scenes” and are linked to the “most extensive human trafficking operations in recent UK history.” Tracy Gilbert, a member of the Labour Party, has urged for the closure of adult services websites, such as Adultwork and Vivastreet, which are currently operating within the boundaries of the law.
During a debate at Westminster Hall, Gilbert emphasized that these platforms are facilitating large-scale exploitation. She demanded action from Westminster to shut down these websites immediately, highlighting their role in human trafficking activities across Scotland and the UK.
In her address, Gilbert stressed the urgency of the situation, stating, “These websites are crime scenes. Shut them down now, hold their operators accountable, and provide justice to their victims.” She pointed out the substantial evidence indicating that these online establishments are contributing to widespread sex trafficking and exploitation in the UK.
She highlighted the need for Police Scotland to launch a thorough investigation into the individuals involved in running these websites, as the severity of the offense could lead to a life sentence. Additionally, Gilbert called for a review of the laws concerning prostitution in England and Wales, criticizing the lack of action against the operators of Adultwork and Vivastreet.
The criticism extended to the Home Office and police, as they were previously condemned by the home affairs committee for engaging with the management of adult services sites. This practice was deemed unacceptable and has ceased since the change in government leadership.
Gregor Poynton, a Labour assistant whip, highlighted ongoing efforts by the government to revise prostitution laws to address sexual exploitation issues. He emphasized the need to end the exploitation of women and vulnerable individuals under the guise of prostitution, condemning the profit-making from such exploitative practices.
Poynton stated that under the current government, there have been no official meetings with organizations associated with online adult services, acknowledging the role of technology in enabling sexual exploitation. He emphasized the importance of platforms taking responsibility for their content and preventing criminal activities on their websites.
A report by the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner in February raised concerns about adult services sites being used as tools for abuse. Commissioner Eleanor Lyons called for strict actions against these platforms to protect vulnerable individuals and prevent criminals from profiteering.
In response, a statement from Vivastreet emphasized their compliance with regulations and safety measures to combat exploitation. The platform highlighted its efforts to detect and remove potentially exploitative content, working closely with law enforcement agencies to address illegal activities.
