A tragic incident occurred during a live-fire training exercise at Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland, leading to the death of a 25-year-old Royal Artillery officer, Philip Muldowney. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that Captain Muldowney was fatally shot in the back during the tactical training session with Scots Guards on Sunday.
The MoD expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Captain Philip Gilbert Muldowney and extended condolences to his family and friends. An obituary highlighted Capt Muldowney’s career, noting his dedication to his role since joining the Army in January 2020 and commissioning into the Royal Artillery in December of the same year after training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Described as an enthusiastic and dedicated officer known as Gilbert, Capt Muldowney was praised for his leadership, courage, and commitment to his soldiers. His colleagues remembered him for his warmth, energy, and sense of humor, which left a lasting impact on those around him.
Senior officers and peers within the British Army shared heartfelt tributes alongside the MoD statement. Capt Duncan Morrison, a fellow Fire Support Team commander, recalled memorable moments with Capt Muldowney during their time together on Operation Cabrit, highlighting his fun-loving and professional nature.
