“Lost Tortoise Molly Finds Her Way to Canadian Marsh”

Date:

In a surprising turn of events, a hefty African spurred tortoise named Molly was discovered meandering around Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba, Canada, far from her native Sahara desert habitat. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at the marsh, expressed astonishment at the tortoise’s presence due to its unusual size for the location.

After receiving multiple reports of tortoise sightings, Malchuk and her team embarked on a rescue mission, initially assuming it was a common snapping turtle native to the area. However, a sighting reported on the iNaturalist app confirmed the unusual presence of Molly, prompting the team to search for her.

The discovery of Molly in the marsh was unexpected, as the staff had anticipated a smaller creature. A visitor’s tip led to the ultimate spotting of the tortoise, prompting the team to provide care and attention to Molly, feeding her cucumbers and flower petals while she explored the marsh interpretive center.

Efforts to locate Molly’s owners through social media were successful, and she was joyfully reunited with her family on July 22. The family had raised Molly for 15 years since she was a hatchling, and it was revealed that she had likely escaped through a gap in their backyard fence during renovations.

Despite the heartwarming reunion, the mystery remains as to how Molly traveled over 20 kilometers to the marsh. One speculation is that a well-intentioned individual may have relocated her to the wetland, unaware of the risks tortoises face in such environments. The possibility of Molly navigating the distance on her own adds to the intrigue of her unexpected journey.
