“Ransomware Attack Strikes Winnipeg Hospital, Systems Affected”

Date:

A cyberattack has struck Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre, impacting various systems including door access, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning at Manitoba’s largest hospital. Shared Health confirmed the ransomware incident, emphasizing that patient care and clinical services remain unaffected. The health authority assured the public that hospital operations continue without disruption and that patients have not been impacted by the attack.

Shared Health disclosed that they are actively investigating the incident to assess its extent and impact on affected systems. They have also engaged with experts and notified the provincial government for assistance in resolving the issue. While the attack has caused disruptions in certain maintenance systems, no other hospital systems have been compromised.

In response to the cyberattack, Health Sciences Centre has bolstered security measures by increasing the presence of security and safety officers at hospital entrances. This action aims to mitigate risks associated with compromised door access, particularly in light of past security concerns at the facility. Darlene Jackson, president of the Manitoba Nurses Union, expressed concerns about the potential safety implications of unauthorized access due to the compromised doors.

The cyber incident follows a warning from Manitoba’s auditor general two years ago, advising Shared Health to enhance its cybersecurity practices to ensure a swift response to potential attacks. The auditor general recommended regular testing and increased cybersecurity training to strengthen the organization’s defenses. Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara praised the swift response of hospital staff in safeguarding patients and personnel during the ongoing situation.
