A young cheerleader from Louisiana State University, Madison Brooks, tragically passed away after an alleged gang rape involving three men in a car. The incident occurred in 2023, leading to Brooks being thrown out of the vehicle and ultimately struck by a truck on a highway. Desmond Carter, one of the accused individuals, is facing trial for his involvement in the assault, with the court hearing scheduled for August 17.
Charged alongside Carter are Kaivon Washington and Casen Carver, accused of raping Brooks following a night of drinking at a bar. The defendants claim the encounter was consensual, denying the accusations of assault. Surveillance footage captured Brooks wandering into traffic, with reports indicating her high blood-alcohol level at nearly four times the legal limit.
In legal filings, lawyers for Carver and Carter disputed the allegations of sexual assault on Brooks, suggesting her injuries may have stemmed from consensual relations with another student. However, these claims were dismissed by the prosecution and labeled as inappropriate and irrelevant to the case by the presiding judge.
Carter’s defense team has sought to prevent Brooks’ supporters from wearing her favorite color, arguing that it could influence the jury. The Brooks family and their advocates have been donning pink attire to honor the deceased student during public gatherings and court sessions.
Citing concerns over maintaining a fair trial environment, the defense has referenced previous cases where courtroom atmospheres were deemed prejudicial to defendants. Prosecutors refute these arguments, asserting that the current case is being misrepresented.
