“Majority of Britons Regret Brexit, Favor EU Reentry”

Date:

A recent survey indicates that a majority of British citizens believe that the decision to exit the European Union (EU) was a mistake, with more than half expressing a preference to rejoin the bloc. Despite these sentiments, government officials have stated that they do not plan to reopen discussions on the topic, and incoming PM Andy Burnham has dismissed the idea of reversing Brexit. The survey findings reveal that 57% of respondents view Brexit as a misstep, and 55% are in favor of rejoining the EU, including a significant portion of leave voters who now consider Brexit a failure.

The debate surrounding the possibility of rejoining the EU has been reignited, especially among younger voters who show a strong inclination towards reentry. While acknowledging the adverse effects of Brexit, Burnham cautioned against revisiting the issue, warning that perpetual argumentation could hinder the country’s progress. Similarly, EU relations minister Nick Thomas-Symonds described the idea of returning to the EU as unattainable, emphasizing the need to adapt to the post-Brexit reality.

Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting recently proposed the idea of rejoining the EU, citing diminished wealth, power, and control post-Brexit. Despite calls for closer ties with Europe from the Labour Party, Burnham emphasized the importance of moving forward rather than dwelling on past disagreements. A separate study targeting Generation Z voters revealed overwhelming support for rejoining the EU, with 60% expressing a desire to return if given the opportunity.

The data further indicates a demographic shift, with a higher percentage of Brexit supporters passing away over the past decade compared to remain supporters. Additionally, a recent poll conducted by The Mirror unveiled that a majority of respondents would opt to rejoin the EU in a hypothetical scenario of another Brexit referendum. While younger age groups displayed strong support for reentry, older demographics showed a more divided stance on the issue.
