“Man Avoids Jail Time for Impersonating Woman in £9k Scam”

Date:

A deceitful individual, Adam Mowle, avoided imprisonment after deceiving a man by impersonating a woman in dire health to swindle £9,000 from him, which he then spent on his own horse. Mowle, 34, established a fraudulent persona named Jenna Smith on a dating app, manipulating his victim into transferring substantial sums of money. The victim, believing he had found his ideal partner, fell prey to Mowle’s elaborate scheme.

Under the guise of Jenna, Mowle engaged in online conversations with the man, promising a lasting relationship. He exploited the victim’s generosity by fabricating stories of Jenna’s illness and financial struggles. Mowle, using a fake dating profile on Tinder as Jenna Leigh Smith, engaged in extensive communication with the victim, creating a virtual romance that spanned a year. Despite frequent phone calls in which Mowle impersonated a woman’s voice, he always evaded meeting in person, leaving the victim frustrated.

The victim, convinced by Jenna’s fabricated tales of sickness, financial hardship, and ailing father, unwittingly made 78 payments totaling £9,165 to Mowle’s bank account over ten months. While Mowle, residing in Harwich, Essex, pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining criminal funds, the court showed leniency by imposing a suspended prison sentence of 12 months for two years. Additionally, Mowle was ordered to compensate the victim with £9,165, cover prosecution costs of £500, pay a victim surcharge of £187, and undertake 25 days of rehabilitation.

Evidence in Mowle’s bank account suggested he had duped other individuals using a similar modus operandi. Despite contacting potential victims, many were too embarrassed to come forward. Concerns arose when the victim discovered inconsistencies in Jenna’s identity, leading to suspicions that culminated in the revelation that the money had been diverted to Mowle.

The victim, devastated by the betrayal, spiraled into depression and resorted to gambling in a futile attempt to recover his losses, ultimately losing an additional £93,000. Mowle’s fraudulent activities extended beyond this case, with implications of coercive behavior and trauma. Despite claiming to have experienced psychosis and creating the false identity of Jenna during the fraud, Mowle expressed remorse and is seeking mental health support.

The court acknowledged the severity and premeditation of Mowle’s actions, emphasizing the substantial financial impact on the victim. While custody was deemed appropriate, the court opted for a suspended sentence due to Mowle’s engagement with mental health services, aiming for rehabilitation. Authorities commended the diligent investigation that led to Mowle’s prosecution, highlighting the commitment to combat fraud and protect the community.

Victims of romance fraud are often hesitant to report such crimes due to feelings of shame and humiliation. Encouragement was extended to report instances of fraud without fear, as support and assistance are available. Suspected victims or individuals with information on romance fraud were urged to contact Suffolk Trading Standards for confidential assistance.
