A tragic incident occurred at Khao Yai National Park in Thailand, where a wild bull elephant fatally attacked a man identified as Jirathachai Jiraphatboonyathorn. The victim, in his 60s, was exercising near his camp with his wife when the elephant, named Phlai Oiwan, unexpectedly charged at him. The elephant grabbed the man with its trunk, threw him to the ground, and stomped on him, causing severe injuries.
The head of the park protection unit, Wanchai Kaenchantuek, responded to the cries for help and discovered the victim. The man’s wife managed to escape the attack after park rangers intervened. Following the incident, officials are considering options regarding the elephant, including relocation or behavior modification.
This unfortunate event marks the third reported fatality linked to the same elephant. Authorities have emphasized the need for increased monitoring and caution among tourists, as wild elephant attacks have resulted in over 220 deaths since 2012, as reported by Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation.
