“Man Urges Lords: Show Compassion for Assisted Dying”

Date:

A man is urging the House of Lords to display compassion as he reflects on the final moments he spent with his sister before she sought assisted dying at Dignitas in Switzerland. In remembrance of Paola Marra’s passing at Dignitas, terminally ill advocates will gather outside Parliament on the grim anniversary.

On the 11th Day of Committee Stage and Dying In Dignity, campaigners are imploring the Lords to cease obstructing the bill and honor Paola’s memory. Paola, the former wife of Blur drummer Dave Rowntree, battled excruciating pain from breast and bowel cancer before her journey to the Swiss clinic. Despite her suffering, she dedicated herself to creating a documentary advocating for a change in UK legislation, stating, “When you watch this, I will be dead.”

Her brother, Tony Marra, a filmmaker and actor residing in Canada, recounted their last interaction through a video call at Dignitas. He expressed his deep sorrow at not being able to be by her side and respected her decision to face the ordeal alone.

Paola, who produced two films—one for public release and another for her brother and friends—articulated her belief in the right to assisted dying to maintain dignity and control over one’s end-of-life experience. Her brother implores the House of Lords to prioritize compassion over personal beliefs and consider the benefits a change in the law could offer to those currently suffering and those yet to face similar challenges.

Reflecting on the recent defeat of the assisted dying bill in Scotland, he remains optimistic about progress in England and Scotland, acknowledging the challenges ahead but expressing confidence in eventual success. He shared poignant memories of celebrating Paola’s life and resilience despite her agonizing journey with cancer.

While some opponents voice concerns about the potential risks of coercion in assisted dying legislation, advocates emphasize the importance of respecting individual autonomy and the need for compassionate end-of-life options. The ongoing debate surrounding this contentious issue underscores the complexity and sensitivity of end-of-life care decisions.
