Archaeologists have unearthed a medieval city like a “time capsule” hidden in a dense forest, seemingly vanished centuries ago without a trace.
Researchers have identified the remains of the ancient city of Stolzenberg, a European settlement from the 14th or 15th centuries that mysteriously collapsed. New discoveries and “magnetic anomalies” have led archaeologists to believe that the city lies near the present-day village of Sławoborze in Poland.
Local testing results have confirmed the location of the ancient border town, previously disputed between Pomerania and Neumark, as stated by archaeologist Marcin Krzepkowski of the Relicta Foundation.
Exploring a forested area, researchers found massive earthen ramparts and an 18-foot-deep moat, supported by geophysical surveys indicating these as the ruins of Stolzenberg.
The detection of “magnetic anomalies” revealed building remnants around the rectangular market square, consistent with a typical layout of medieval towns established under German law.
Among approximately 400 artifacts found, some dating back to the Bronze Age and others as recent as World War Two, the discovery of building foundations and medieval artifacts has solidified the existence of Stolzenberg.
Despite the substantial evidence, Mr. Krzepkowski mentioned that the exploration of the site is just beginning, suggesting that the town’s initial location may have been abandoned later on.
He emphasized the significance of unraveling the mysteries within this “time capsule” site to enhance understanding of settlement and city formation processes in the region.
