“Met Office Warns of Severe Thunderstorms in UK”

Date:

British residents are being cautioned about severe thunderstorms by the Met Office, urging them to prepare an “emergency flood kit.” Following the record-breaking warm spring in England and Wales, certain regions are now experiencing heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning as stormy weather conditions set in.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms in parts of Scotland from 3 pm to 10 pm today. The national weather agency advises residents in the affected areas to have an emergency kit ready in case of flash flooding. The agency recommends preparing a flood plan and essential items such as torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack to better cope with potential power cuts.

This year, England and Wales recorded their warmest spring to date, attributed in part to an early heatwave in May. However, the weather has now shifted with low-pressure systems bringing in heavy rain, particularly in southeast England, surpassing the rainfall for the entire months of April and May.

The Met Office also advises individuals in the storm-affected areas to check road conditions, bus and train schedules, and adjust travel plans accordingly to avoid delays. In case of thunder, people are urged to seek shelter in enclosed safe spaces like cars, avoiding trees or tall structures that may attract lightning strikes. Staying updated on weather forecasts is recommended as weather warnings may change rapidly.

Travelers are cautioned to be cautious of standing water and hail that could lead to delays, as well as potential damage to buildings from lightning strikes. The forecast for tonight indicates showers easing with clear spells briefly before rain returns to western areas overnight. Wednesday is expected to bring eastward-moving rain across Scotland followed by a mix of sunshine and showers, with heavier showers in the north.
