Mexico’s most influential drug cartel leader was honored in a lavish final ceremony this week, laid to rest in a solid gold casket. The burial of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, took place in Jalisco amidst massive floral displays and a significant military presence. El Mencho, the former head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was fatally shot by Mexican security forces last month, triggering unrest and turmoil among cartel members.
The funeral procession was attended by numerous individuals, many sheltering under black umbrellas on a sunny day, accompanied by the sounds of Mexican banda music. As per a federal official, El Mencho was interred in a cemetery in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara.
Security measures were heightened near a funeral home where unidentified large floral arrangements, some featuring a rooster motif, were being delivered. El Mencho, often referred to as the “Lord of the Roosters,” was killed by the Mexican army about a week ago during a capture operation, succumbing to multiple gunshot wounds.
Following El Mencho’s demise, violence erupted in approximately 20 states. The death certificate corroborating the events matched the Defense Secretary’s account of the operation, detailing a confrontation where El Mencho and his associates were fatally injured before reaching a hospital.
The autopsy report confirmed gunshot wounds to El Mencho’s chest, abdomen, and legs, with his body transferred to his family after examination in Mexico City. Security concerns persisted due to possible retaliation from the cartel, resulting in over 70 casualties during and after the military operation. Efforts to neutralize other high-ranking cartel members are ongoing.
In Mexico, the burials of drug lords are shrouded in secrecy, fueling attempts by their followers to immortalize them through legends. Soon after El Mencho’s demise, narcocorridos (ballads) recounting his death began circulating, perpetuating the mystique surrounding his legacy.
