A man who spent 12 years growing up with wolves in a cave has admitted feeling disappointed with human life. Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja, dubbed the Mowgli of Spain upon his discovery by authorities, expresses struggles with the harshness of human society and a yearning to return to his former life among animals.
Discovered at 19 in Spain’s Sierra Morena mountain range, Rodríguez had been living with wolves for over a decade, exhibiting primitive behavior such as running barefoot and communicating in grunts. Despite now being 72 years old and residing in a small, cold home, he reminisces about his youth with the creatures as his happiest moments, according to El Pais.
Raised by wolves following the loss of both parents, Rodríguez was abandoned at a young age in the mountains. The creatures became his companions, with wolf cubs treating him as family, and a female wolf even nursing him. He learned survival skills from the wolves, including identifying edible plants.
Upon being rescued and reintegrated into human society, Rodríguez feels disillusioned, claiming mistreatment and deception in the workplace, an inability to connect with others, and ridicule for his lack of knowledge about modern life topics like politics and sports. Despite attempts to return to the mountains, he finds that the wolves no longer recognize him, attributing it to his human scent.
Rodríguez’s life story inspired the 2010 film ‘Among Wolves,’ and researchers have conducted studies on him. He maintains the ability to mimic the sounds of various animals but struggles with the noise and bustle of human community life. Living in a modest home filled with mementos and surrounded by plants and flowers, he seeks solace in nature, aiming to recreate the wild environment he once thrived in.
