“Navy Seal Recalls Eliminating Bin Laden in New Book”

Date:

The US Navy Seal who eliminated Osama Bin Laden has shared his recollection of the pivotal moment when he confirmed the demise of the infamous Taliban leader responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

Former special forces operative Matt Bissonette, part of the elite team that carried out the covert mission in 2011, expressed that he is still coming to terms with the significant Operation Neptune Spear.

Reflecting on the mission fifteen years later, Matt reminisced about the swift deployment of a 23-member special forces unit from the US to Afghanistan and then to Bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan.

Having served in Iraq and Afghanistan on multiple combat tours between 2001 and 2012, Matt, now 50, enlisted in the Navy Seals in 1999, shortly before the tragic events of September 11 unfolded. The terrorist attacks orchestrated by Bin Laden solidified the team’s focus on capturing the notorious figure.

Recalling the fateful day, Matt emphasized the clarity of their mission to apprehend Bin Laden, stating, “From that day, it was very clear that it was Osama Bin Laden that we were after. We had a focus – ‘get this guy.’” He expressed pride in the team’s accomplishment of eliminating a significant global threat.

In April 2011, after years of evasive actions by Bin Laden, Matt and his team received intelligence about a potential hideout in Pakistan. Following rigorous training, the team, accompanied by a translator and an explosives detection dog, embarked on a mission to a compound believed to harbor Al Qaeda targets.

Despite facing challenges during the operation, including a malfunctioning helicopter due to adverse weather conditions, Matt sustained severe injuries, including a broken neck. He vividly described the chaotic moments leading up to the apprehension of Bin Laden within the compound.

Upon encountering Bin Laden’s son and subsequently locating Bin Laden himself, the team swiftly secured the area, gathered valuable intelligence, and evacuated Bin Laden’s body and potential evidence before departing the scene.

Following the successful mission, Matt grappled with the aftermath, both physically and emotionally, as the gravity of his injuries became apparent. Despite facing criticism for divulging classified information in his initial book under a pseudonym, Matt has since released a second book under his real name, shedding light on the personal challenges he endured.

As the anniversary of the operation approaches, Matt advocates for a cautious approach to US involvement in the Middle East, urging against deploying troops on the ground to prevent unnecessary casualties. Reflecting on past experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, he emphasizes the importance of learning from history to avoid repeating past mistakes.

Matt’s upcoming book, “No Easy Way,” delves into his experiences and the lasting impact of the mission, offering a poignant glimpse into the realities of military service and its aftermath.
