NHS Dental Charges to Rise in England from April 1

Date:

Patients in need of dental care will soon be facing increased charges across England as the cost of NHS dental treatments is set to rise by an average of 1.7% starting April 1. This price hike will impact all individuals paying for NHS dental services, ranging from regular check-ups to those requiring more complex procedures. The adjusted fees will be in effect for the 2026/27 financial year to support funding for dental services, with some groups still eligible for free treatment or financial aid.

The changes come amidst the “Dentists for All” initiative by the Daily Mirror, advocating for universal access to NHS dental care. The price for standard treatment, categorized as band one, will increase from £27.40 to £27.90, covering examinations and X-rays. For procedures like fillings or extractions falling under band two, costs will rise by £1.30 to £76.60. Patients needing extensive treatments such as braces or dentures will see band three charges go up from £326.70 to £332.10.

According to a statement from Parliament UK, the annual increase in NHS dental charges is crucial for sustaining dental services, with the 1.66% uplift for the upcoming financial year aimed at supporting patients and providers. The statement reassures continued financial aid for those in need, with exemptions available for certain dental procedures.

In a separate development, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a freeze on medicine prescription charges to alleviate financial burdens. The decision to raise dental fees, however, has faced criticism from the British Dental Association (BDA). Shiv Pabary, chairman of the BDA’s General Dental Practice Committee, expressed concerns over the impact of the fee hike on low-income individuals, questioning the government’s priorities amid budgetary constraints.
