The Ministry of Justice faces criticism from law enforcement following the early release of a man sentenced to nearly four years in prison for a vicious attack on a police officer. Alex Quinn, 20, was imprisoned in February for his involvement in the brutal assault on PC Ryan Davis, resulting in severe physical injuries and lasting mental health issues. Quinn, along with his father Richard, assaulted the officer in Hereford, leading to a three years and 10 months sentence for Quinn.
Despite the severity of the crime, Quinn was released after just over three months under the Home Detention Curfew Scheme, causing outrage within the West Mercia police force. PC Davis, who sustained multiple broken bones during the incident, expressed his fear and trauma, highlighting the lack of remorse shown by the perpetrators. West Mercia’s Police and Crime Commissioner, along with the Police Federation, condemned the decision and called for a review of the case.
In response to the backlash, a Ministry of Justice spokesperson defended the release conditions under the curfew system, emphasizing the strict monitoring and consequences for rule violations. The decision to release Quinn was deemed “utterly appalling” by officials, undermining the justice system’s core principles.
PC Davis shared the lasting impact of the assault, revealing his struggles with PTSD and the physical and mental pain inflicted by the attackers. The officer’s sentiments were echoed by law enforcement representatives, questioning the system’s ability to protect officers from harm. The call for a comprehensive review of the case, including the release decision, was made to ensure justice for the victim and uphold safety for frontline officers.
