Pakistan has initiated attacks on Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and multiple other cities following a period of escalating tensions and cross-border incidents. In response, the Afghan Taliban have retaliated with artillery assaults on Pakistani territory, resulting in both sides claiming casualties inflicted on the other.
According to Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif, the country is currently engaged in an active conflict with Afghanistan, marking the most severe armed confrontation between the two neighboring nations since a ceasefire mediated by Qatar in October. The surge in violence along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan poses a significant risk of destabilizing the region, especially amid allegations that India may have supported Afghan-led attacks, fueling concerns about the proliferation of terrorist groups and the broader threat to global security.

The Afghan Taliban have launched large-scale offensive operations against Pakistani forces, particularly along the Durand Line, a historical border established in 1893 by UK diplomat Sir Mortimer Durand to separate British India from Afghanistan amid geopolitical rivalries with Russia.
The contentious border, stretching 1,640 miles between Afghanistan and present-day Pakistan, has long been a point of dispute, dividing major ethnic groups such as the Pashtun and Balochs. The region has witnessed recurrent terror attacks by Pakistani Taliban, Tehrik-e-Taliban, and Baloch rebels, further exacerbating tensions and highlighting the volatile nature of the border as one of the world’s most politically charged divisions.
The situation escalated in 2017 when Pakistan began fortifying the border with razor-wire fences and watchtowers, leading to clashes and intermittent closures of crossing points.
