The Princess of Wales is commencing a two-day trip to Italy today, marking a significant milestone in her recovery from cancer. Kate will land in Reggio Emilia, located in northern Italy, later today to conduct a fact-finding mission for her Centre for Early Childhood, overseen by the Royal Foundation.
During her visit, she will tour various educational establishments in the region, known for its excellence in early childhood education. This marks her first international work trip since being diagnosed with cancer in early 2024.
Having undergone six months of preventive chemotherapy, the Princess announced her remission in 2025 but has been gradually easing back into full-time royal duties. Her last major overseas visit was in December 2022 when she accompanied Prince William to the U.S. for the Earthshot Prize award ceremony.
A spokesperson from Kensington Palace stated that this visit signifies an essential step in the Princess’ recovery journey. The focus on early childhood education aligns with her commitment to advocating for this cause in the long term.
Kate will be honored with the Primo Tricolore award at the beginning of her trip, followed by engagements at Reggio Emilia’s town hall where she will meet with local leaders and individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping the region’s education philosophy.
In line with her dedication to early childhood development, the Princess aims to lead global discussions on the subject and collaborate with world leaders, educators, and professionals. Her experiences studying in Italy have inspired her to establish an international network to enhance early childhood practices worldwide.
The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Years Development, established by the Princess in 2021, is poised to create a global alliance to promote holistic child development. This trip marks a crucial step in Kate’s ongoing efforts in this field.
Christian Guy, Executive Director of The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, emphasized the importance of Kate’s global mission and the urgency of prioritizing early childhood development. The Princess intends to initiate a new international conversation on this topic, emphasizing the significance of early brain development and holistic child nurturing.
This visit represents a significant moment for the Princess as she emerges from her recovery phase and expands her role as a leader in early childhood research and development.
