A potential solution on the table involves requiring all pornography websites to verify the age and consent of individuals featured in their content, ensuring that permission was granted and can be withdrawn at any time.
Surprisingly, basic safeguards such as age verification and consent protocols are currently lacking in mainstream pornography platforms, leading to instances of child abuse, sexual violence, and trafficking victims being exploited on these sites. The absence of these fundamental checks has enabled the proliferation of harmful content without the knowledge or consent of those involved.
The need for stricter regulations in the pornography industry was emphasized by survivor Alia Azariah, who shared her distressing experience of being coerced and abused in the industry. Despite the traumatic nature of the videos depicting her past, she remains powerless to have them removed, highlighting the urgent need for increased protection and control over personal content.
The House of Lords recently endorsed measures to enforce age verification and ongoing consent requirements for all individuals portrayed in pornography content, aligning with the Online Safety Act and recognizing the unique challenges posed by the pornography trade. This initiative has garnered support from various charities, including UK Feminista, Barnardo’s, and CEASE, as well as survivors advocating for enhanced safeguards.
As the Crime and Policing Bill returns to the Commons, the Government faces a pivotal decision on whether to uphold these crucial protections or discard them. The choice ultimately reflects whose rights and well-being the state prioritizes – the profits of pornographers or the safety and dignity of individuals, including men, women, and children affected by this industry.
It is imperative to take a stand and demonstrate solidarity with those impacted by these issues.
