A recent ransom communication claiming knowledge about the individual responsible for abducting Nancy Guthrie, a grandmother, has unveiled a disturbing scheme to inflict anguish upon her family, as per a law enforcement statement.
This communication indicated having details on the potential location of Nancy’s remains, coinciding with her daughter Savannah’s return to her job at NBC’s “Today” show. Nancy, aged 84, was reportedly taken from her residence in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1.
Numerous ransom messages have been sent post her disappearance, with some directed to media outlets. These messages contained conflicting information, with some asserting Nancy’s demise while others suggesting otherwise.
Messages sent to TMZ were composed by an unidentified individual demanding one bitcoin in exchange for information. The value of one bitcoin is currently estimated at £52,973.
FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer expressed skepticism regarding the legitimacy of some of these messages, suggesting they could be fraudulent attempts. She highlighted that the timing of these communications coinciding with Savannah Guthrie’s return to work was deliberate, aiming to intensify the suffering of the family.
Coffindaffer opined that the individual requesting bitcoin might not possess genuine information, especially as they prefer cryptocurrency payment over the substantial reward offered by the family. She concluded that these individuals are likely scammers.
An extensive collaborative investigation has been initiated following the suspected kidnapping. Surveillance footage from a video doorbell at Nancy’s residence captured an armed individual wearing a mask and carrying a backpack.
Subsequent to Nancy’s disappearance, her daughter Savannah, a presenter, temporarily stepped back from her network role to assist in the search for her mother. Savannah expressed gratitude to law enforcement and the public for their support during this search effort.
Authorities are actively pursuing the investigation, with Nancy’s well-being remaining uncertain.
