The recovery operation for the deceased divers in the Maldives has been intensified following the tragic incident where a rescue specialist lost their life in the challenging ‘shark cave’. A team of three Finnish divers has resumed the mission after five days of the initial report of the group’s disappearance. The body of Gianluca Benedetti, their diving instructor, was discovered near the cave’s entrance shortly after the Italian divers failed to resurface.
The bodies of Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, Muriel Oddenino, and Federico Gualtieri were located deep inside the cave system earlier this week by a specialized team. The search operation has been reinstated after a temporary halt due to the unfortunate death of a local military diver during a risky attempt to reach the victims.
The scuba diving tragedy that occurred last Thursday is considered the most significant diving accident ever in the Indian Ocean nation. The bodies were found in the third section of the cave, known as ‘Shark Cave’, where large sea creatures are often spotted resting.
The retrieval process is complex due to the cave’s narrow tunnels, with the bodies lying approximately 60 meters deep, about 200 feet, and up to 30 meters further from the reach of the coast guard for eventual handover to the authorities.
The families of the deceased divers are seeking answers regarding the circumstances of the tragic incident. Concerns have been raised about the group’s decision to explore such depths with limited diving equipment.
Harsh weather conditions were reported in the area when the divers went missing, prompting warnings for boat passengers and fishermen. The University of Genoa clarified that they had not sanctioned any deep-sea dives as part of the team’s scientific research, indicating that the dive was conducted independently.
Efforts are underway to recover the bodies of the victims, with the team of Finnish divers equipped with advanced technical systems for the challenging operation. Despite the tragic loss, a sixth diver was spared from the cave tragedy, highlighting the unpredictable nature of such underwater expeditions.
