An update from Network Rail has been released regarding the recent train collision near Bedford that resulted in the death of a train driver and injuries to around 100 passengers.
A temporary road has been constructed in the field adjacent to the train tracks where the accident occurred to facilitate the intricate recovery operation involving two 110-tonne rail-mounted Kirow cranes for lifting the carriages. Subsequently, a road-mounted crane will transfer the carriages onto a specialized trailer designed for heavy equipment transportation.
Following this, the carriages will be relocated from the site via road transport, as confirmed by Network Rail. Engineers will then evaluate the track, perform any necessary repairs, reinstall the overhead lines, and conduct final safety checks before reopening the railway.
Network Rail’s statement indicates that a complex operation is underway to remove the damaged trains and carriages, assess any potential damage, and carry out essential repairs. The process involves dismantling the Overhead Line Equipment to construct a temporary access road and concrete foundation to support crane operations.
The train driver who tragically lost his life in the collision has been identified as Shaun Burton, a 60-year-old East Midlands Railway employee since 2019, praised for his dedication and professionalism that left a positive impact on colleagues and passengers.
During the incident, one hundred passengers sustained various injuries, with nine of them in critical condition. The crash occurred on a Friday afternoon near Bedford when the 4.40pm EMR service from Corby to London St Pancras collided with the 3.50pm service from Nottingham to London St Pancras.
Network Rail has advised travelers passing through Bedford that disruptions will persist until June 28, with no Greater Thameslink Railway services north of Luton and no EMR services south of Bedford.
