A Reform Party councilor, who previously stated that the Holocaust was a “hoax,” has resigned shortly after winning the election. Jay Cooper, elected to represent the Bootle West ward in Merseyside during the recent local elections with 705 votes, stepped down within a week due to controversial social media comments made last year.
Cooper faced backlash for his remarks on the fatal shooting of US commentator Charlie Kirk, where he expressed sympathy and questioned the legitimacy of the Holocaust. Nigel Farage, during his visit to Merseyside, declared that Cooper was unwelcome in the Reform Party. Cooper has since deleted the contentious posts from his public Facebook page, offered an apology, and decided to resign from the party but continue serving as an independent councilor.
In his apology, Cooper acknowledged the reality of the Holocaust, expressing regret for his insensitive comments and the distress caused. He emphasized his commitment to serving the people of Bootle West and earning their trust, despite the controversy. The BBC reported that Reform UK confirmed Cooper’s resignation and revoked his party membership.
Cooper’s resignation follows another Reform UK councilor, Stuart Prior, also stepping down. Prior, who was elected to Essex County Council along with 52 other Reform members, resigned from the council and was expelled from the party after the Mirror exposed his controversial social media posts.
