Reform UK Candidate Withdraws After Nazi Salute Photo

Date:

A candidate from Reform UK in Wales has withdrawn from the upcoming elections following the emergence of a photo showing him making a gesture resembling a Nazi salute. Corey Edwards, who was set to be the main candidate for the Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg constituency in the Welsh Parliament election on May 7, cited mental health concerns as the reason for stepping down.

The controversy arose after a picture of Mr. Edwards, a former adviser to the Conservative Party, surfaced showing him raising his right arm with a finger under his nose.

In response to the situation, Nigel Farage supported Mr. Edwards, explaining that the gesture was meant to mimic a character from the 1970s TV show “Fawlty Towers.” Farage clarified the context of the photo, emphasizing that it was a harmless imitation and highlighting Mr. Edwards’ humanity.

When questioned about Mr. Edwards’ candidacy status, Farage acknowledged the negative optics of the photo but refrained from making a definitive statement, drawing a comparison to a Plaid Cymru candidate who had resigned over an offensive tweet.

However, a spokesperson for Reform UK Wales announced on Friday that Mr. Edwards had decided to withdraw as a candidate due to mental health issues. The party expressed well wishes for his future and requested privacy for Mr. Edwards during this challenging period.

In a statement to ITV prior to his resignation, Mr. Edwards defended himself, stating that the photo had been misconstrued. He clarified that his intention was not to trivialize or make light of the atrocities of the Nazi regime, emphasizing the distinction between his actions and the historical significance of the gesture.
