“Rocky Statue Celebrates 50 Years on Philly Steps”

Date:

Fifty years in the past, Sylvester Stallone made an iconic moment by running up the 72 stone steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, immortalizing his boxing hero character Rocky Balboa in movie history. The original Rocky film, released in 1976, catapulted Stallone to overnight stardom, earning him a Best Picture Oscar. To celebrate this milestone anniversary, an 8-foot bronze statue of Rocky now stands triumphantly at the pinnacle of those famous steps.

Drawing in millions of tourists annually, the statue and steps have become a must-see attraction, allowing fans to relive the legendary scene from the movie. Stallone, reflecting on the significance of the steps and the statue’s placement, expressed that they offer a tangible connection to the Rocky legacy, unlike other fictional superhero artifacts.

Originally commissioned by Stallone for Rocky III in 1982, the bronze statue was eventually recognized as a genuine work of art and moved inside the museum for an exhibition titled Rising Up: Rocky and the Making of Monuments. Another cast of the statue, belonging to Stallone, has now been relocated to the top of the steps, where it will permanently reside once the exhibition concludes.

As Stallone approaches his 80th birthday, his journey from a tumultuous upbringing to Hollywood success is a remarkable tale of resilience. Despite early struggles and rejections, Stallone’s determination led to the creation of Rocky, propelling him into the limelight. Married to Jennifer Flavin and a father of five, Stallone’s decision to embody Rocky himself has defined his career.

While Stallone has ruled out another Rocky installment, a biopic titled “I Play Rocky” and a biography called “The Steps” are set for release. Additionally, the sculptor of the Rocky statue, Auldwin Thomas Schomberg, is launching a book detailing the making of the iconic sculpture.

Stallone’s vision for the statue as a symbol of victory has resonated with fans worldwide, solidifying its place as a cultural landmark in Philadelphia. Dr. Paul Farber, curator of the Rising Up exhibition, emphasizes the statue’s significance as a pilgrimage site, comparing it to other iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and David.

The enduring legacy of Rocky and the iconic statue symbolizes Stallone’s journey from obscurity to superstardom, inspiring fans and art enthusiasts alike.
