Support for the British Royal Family has seen a significant decline following ongoing allegations linked to Jeffrey Epstein, as indicated by a recent poll. The survey, conducted by the anti-monarchy group Republic, revealed that approval for the monarchy has fallen to 45%, down from 48% four months ago.
Amid these developments, Thames Valley Police stated they are examining claims that a member of the Royal Family shared confidential information from his role as the UK’s trade envoy with Epstein. These allegations surfaced from a collection of three million documents released by the US Department of Justice concerning Epstein.
In response to the situation, Buckingham Palace announced that the King expressed deep concern over the accusations involving Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and is prepared to assist the police if necessary. Additional accusations suggest that Epstein arranged for a second woman to meet with Andrew in the UK for a sexual encounter, and that Andrew and Epstein allegedly solicited a threesome with an exotic dancer at Epstein’s residence in Florida. Andrew has denied any misconduct.
A recent study by Savanta conducted before the Palace’s statement revealed that 32% of respondents preferred an elected head of state, while those undecided increased from 20% to 24% since October. The Prince and Princess of Wales also publicly addressed the Epstein scandal for the first time, expressing their deep concern for the victims.
During a visit to Lancashire, the King faced scrutiny as a bystander questioned his knowledge of Andrew’s actions upon arrival at Clitheroe train station. Republic’s CEO, Graham Smith, emphasized the diminishing support for the monarchy and the need for a thoughtful discussion on the future of the British monarchy in light of the allegations against Andrew.
The poll, which surveyed over 2,100 adults, asked about preferences between a monarchy and an elected head of state. Previous research by Savanta was conducted before Andrew’s agreement to cease using his royal titles and before the King’s decision to revoke his prince title and dukedom.
Following recent events, Andrew has moved from his Royal Lodge to a property on the King’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
