Date:

Scott Hastings, a renowned rugby figure, tragically passed away from cancer on the same day as his late wife’s birthday, marking two years since her disappearance. The 61-year-old Scottish sports icon, known as his country’s most capped center, had been battling Non-Hodgkin lymphoma for four years. His demise adds to the family’s sorrow following his wife Jenny’s vanishing while swimming at Wardle Bay in Edinburgh in 2024, after a prolonged struggle with mental health issues.

In an official statement released by Scottish Rugby, the family of Scott Hastings, Corey and Kerry-Anne Hastings, announced his peaceful passing on Sunday, May 17. The statement highlighted the significance of his departure on Jenny’s birthday, indicating a reunion with his beloved wife. Scott’s health had rapidly declined due to complications from his cancer treatment, despite the efforts of the medical team at Western General Hospital ICU.

Jenny’s body was found on the couple’s wedding anniversary in September 2024, after she swam out into the Firth of Forth in a tragic attempt to end her suffering caused by severe depression. Scott fondly remembered his wife as a radiant and outgoing individual, emphasizing the challenges she faced with mental health. The couple’s enduring love story was marred by these heartbreaking events.

Scott Hastings, a Scottish rugby legend, achieved remarkable milestones in his career, winning 65 caps for Scotland over 11 years, representing the British & Irish Lions, and playing for the Barbarians. His former coach, Sir Ian McGeechan, recalled Scott’s leadership and determination on the field, particularly during the memorable 1990 Grand Slam game against England. Gregor Townsend, another former teammate and Scotland head coach, praised Scott’s iconic status in Scottish rugby during the late 1980s and early 1990s, highlighting his pivotal role in significant victories.

Honored in the Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame, Scott Hastings will be remembered for his exceptional contributions to the sport. As the rugby community mourns his loss, tributes pour in to celebrate his legacy and enduring impact.
