Russia has introduced a fearsome new robotic weapon designed for the battlefield that can autonomously load and fire ammunition. The experimental robot, known as the Kurier ground robotic system, is equipped with a high-speed mortar system and has been captured on video undergoing live-fire tests for the first time.
The mortar robot is currently undergoing trials with a recently unveiled Bagulnik-82 mortar module, as reported by Russian outlet RG, and is potentially set to be sent to Ukraine in the near future. In a video clip, the compact tracked robot is seen rotating its turret in a snowy terrain before launching a barrage of 82mm mortar rounds at a distant target for training purposes. Following the firing sequence, an automated mechanical arm swiftly reloads the mortar tube with fresh rounds, all without the need for human intervention near the weapon. The reloading process takes approximately five seconds, showcasing the robot’s ability to function remotely on the battlefield.
The existence of the Bagulnik-82 module was previously undisclosed until the release of this footage. Military experts speculate that it may be based on Russia’s 2B24 82mm light mortar, although the extensive automation suggests the development of a new system tailored specifically for robotic operations in combat scenarios.
Both Russia and Ukraine have incorporated robots into various military missions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Ukraine has significantly expanded its robotic fleet over the past four years, utilizing platforms like the THeMIS for resupply and casualty evacuation, as well as electric systems such as the Targan-300 and BRO-1409. Additionally, Ukraine has deployed armed systems like the Droid TW 12.7, which features a remotely controlled .50-caliber machine gun on the front lines.
In addition to the Kurier robots, Russia has also introduced the Omich robotic system, utilized for transporting supplies, equipment, and troops across battlefields.
