Reports from Ukrainian military intelligence suggest that Russian soldiers in Ukraine’s eastern front line have resorted to cannibalism due to harsh winter conditions and food shortages. Allegations point to a few Russian troops engaging in disturbing acts, with evidence of at least five cases where infantrymen are said to have consumed their fellow soldiers.
Purported photographs and intercepted audio messages shared with The Sunday Times reveal details of the incidents uncovered by Ukrainian cybersecurity specialists monitoring battlefield communications on Telegram. In one instance, an unnamed Russian officer reportedly described how a soldier, known as “Khromoy,” killed and attempted to eat two comrades near Myrnohrad in the Donetsk region.
The authenticity of the materials was analyzed, with an independent conflict surgeon noting that the injuries depicted did not appear consistent with combat-related causes. Separate audio exchanges also detailed additional cases of alleged cannibalism among Russian troops, indicating a concerning trend of extreme deprivation and desperation within the ranks.
While the Russian Embassy in London dismissed the claims as propaganda from Ukrainian sources, casualty figures from the Center for Strategic and International Studies indicate significant losses among Russian forces since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The conflict has also taken a heavy toll on Ukrainian soldiers, with estimates suggesting a high number of casualties on both sides, as the devastating war continues to unfold.
