Donald Trump has once again criticized Keir Starmer over the UK’s decision not to participate in US and Israeli military strikes on Iran. The US President, facing a decline in popularity, condemned the Prime Minister following a military operation that led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and several senior officials in Tehran. Trump also reignited his feud with Sadiq Khan, making unfounded accusations against the London Mayor.
Expressing his disappointment with the UK’s stance, Trump remarked, “He has not been helpful. I never expected that from the UK. We cherish our relationship with the UK, which was previously very strong. However, we now have robust connections with other European nations.” Regarding London, Trump criticized the city’s leadership and described it as a different place with problematic individuals.
In response to Trump’s comments, a spokesperson for Sadiq Khan retaliated, suggesting that the Mayor occupies Trump’s thoughts excessively. Trump also wished the UK Prime Minister luck in addressing his challenges, following Labour’s recent electoral setbacks in Gorton and Denton.
Trump accused Labour of prioritizing Muslim voters over US-UK relations, drawing sharp criticism from Darren Jones, chief secretary to the PM. Jones emphasized the UK’s commitment to engaging in military actions based on legal grounds and national interests.
Following the military actions, Iran retaliated by launching drone and missile attacks on Israel, Bahrain, Dubai, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. Despite the UK’s refusal to participate, Trump insisted that it would not have a significant impact. The Prime Minister defended his decision not to allow US access to UK bases for the initial strikes against Iran, stating that he prioritizes Britain’s national interest.
In a statement to the Commons, Sir Keir affirmed his duty to determine actions that serve the best interests of the UK.
