Russian Vessel Commander Facing Legal Action

Date:

The commander of a Russian vessel from a covert fleet captured by British forces in the English Channel is facing legal action for violating sanctions. The MV Smyrtos, loaded with 98,000 tons of oil, was stopped by Royal Marine commandos and National Crime Agency officers in a UK-led operation. Ajay Pant, a 38-year-old Indian citizen, has been accused of shipping prohibited oil from Russia to a third nation in June 2026, breaching specific regulations. Pant appeared in court via video link from Bournemouth police station, confirming his identity and residence in India. His solicitor requested transferring the case to the Crown Court. The court scheduled a hearing on July 16 and remanded Pant in custody. The vessel remains anchored in Dorset with its crew onboard. Prosecutors emphasized the significance of the case due to the vessel’s involvement in Russia’s oil transportation network, crucial for funding military activities. Pant’s defense highlighted his lack of prior criminal record and his position as an employee following instructions. Despite this, the court considered the severity of the charges and remanded Pant into custody until the next hearing.
