A company specializing in sausage casing production has been penalized for discharging 1.8 million liters of contaminated water into a stream, causing significant harm to the environment. The incident occurred in July 2021 at Devro Limited in Moodiesburn, Scotland, due to a blockage in the waste drainage system, resulting in the overflow of waste pipe contents into Bothlin Burn.
The contaminated water, containing fat and chemicals, entered the stream, leading to elevated levels of ammonia, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Public reports described the burn as having a murky appearance and emitting a foul odor, prompting concerns about water pollution.
Subsequent investigations by environmental agencies revealed severe pollution in the burn, with high levels of pollutants exceeding environmental standards significantly. The ecological impact on aquatic life in Bothlin Burn was described as devastating, with numerous dead fish and invertebrates found along the watercourse.
Devro admitted to breaching water environment legislation and was fined £48,000 at Airdrie Sheriff Court. The company also faced a victim surcharge of £3,600. Authorities emphasized that the incident was preventable and highlighted the importance of proper maintenance and infrastructure to prevent such environmental disasters.
Environmental officials stressed the need for businesses to understand and maintain their drainage systems to prevent similar incidents. They urged companies using dual manhole systems to assess their infrastructure, identify risks, and implement necessary controls to protect the environment. Devro expressed regret over the incident and pledged to enhance their environmental protection measures for sustainability.
The environmental agencies involved reiterated their commitment to holding businesses accountable for safeguarding Scotland’s water environment and taking enforcement actions when necessary.
