“Sinkhole near Bolton school prompts road closure”

Date:

A sinkhole near a primary school in Bolton, Lancashire, has led to the temporary closure of a road overnight. The incident occurred when the road’s surface collapsed, creating a significant hole after a vehicle passed over it.

Local councillor David Meehan informed the public via social media that engineers are currently examining a drain adjacent to the sinkhole to assess potential underlying issues. United Utilities, the utility company, has confirmed that investigations are ongoing, necessitating the road closure.

In response to the sinkhole report on Mytham Road, United Utilities promptly dispatched a technician to the site for assessment. The company expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to road users during the investigation process.

Councillor Meehan commended the swift response of local builders, Street Care, and highways authorities in securing the area and initiating necessary safety measures. Despite the road closure, the primary school operated normally, allowing parents to pick up their children without disruption.

Witnesses observed the sudden collapse of the road, forming a hole approximately one meter deep. The sinkhole incident prompted the installation of railings and closure of the affected area as a precautionary measure.

Residents have been advised by Councillor Meehan to avoid the vicinity of the sinkhole for safety reasons. Mytham Road, particularly outside Mytham Primary School, remains closed while awaiting further assessments. Updates on the situation will be shared as they become available.
