England’s legendary figure, Sir Geoff Hurst, is advocating for the preservation of traditional British fish and chip shops, which are facing closure at an alarming rate due to escalating costs. The beloved takeaway industry is under significant strain, with hundreds of establishments now up for sale as owners grapple with mounting expenses driven by factors such as soaring energy bills, increased staffing costs, surging prices of cod and haddock, global fishing tensions, and the overall cost of living crisis.

Sir Geoff Hurst, speaking on National Fish and Chips day, emphasizes the importance of supporting these establishments to prevent their demise, urging consumers to prioritize local chippies. Industry leaders are pushing for the inclusion of alternative British fish varieties like hake, coley, monkfish, rock salmon, and sea bass on menus to shield businesses from the volatility of imported fish.

The football icon stresses the historical significance of fish and chips in British culture and encourages fans to make it their go-to dish during the World Cup, highlighting the need to rally behind these iconic establishments. Despite there being around 10,000 fish and chip shops in the UK, industry experts fear a drastic decline in numbers in the coming years, with approximately 1,500 closures in the past three years alone.
