The newly crowned snooker world champion, Wu Yize, expressed his heartfelt intention to use his prize money to purchase a home and take his parents on a travel adventure. Wu, a 22-year-old from China, secured his first world title by defeating John Higgins with a score of 10-6 at The Crucible on Monday.
In addition to clinching the championship trophy, Wu now has £500,000 in prize money at his disposal. Speaking to SportsBoom, he revealed his plans, stating, “Buy a house and take my parents travelling. There are many things I’d like to buy. My parents are the true champions. They are the source of my strength. I love them so much.”
Despite having some ideas for his winnings, Wu shared that his immediate priority was to get a good night’s sleep after feeling nervous throughout the match. He expressed, “I just want to have a good sleep. I was feeling the nerves throughout the full match, right now I just want to go to bed.”
Reflecting on his victory, Wu highlighted the significance of his mother in his life, especially during her health struggles. He mentioned, “My mum wasn’t in very good health condition for a long time. During that time we were in Sheffield, she has been in hospital a lot. She is forever a source of strength to me.”
Jason Ferguson, the chairman of snooker’s governing body, praised Wu’s exceptional talent and dedication, recognizing the challenges the player had overcome. Ferguson emphasized the importance of Wu’s achievement for his family and the sport, foreseeing a bright future ahead for the young champion.
