Upcoming weather graphics indicate a forecast of snow in the near future.
The Met Office acknowledges some uncertainty regarding the areas most likely to experience heavy snowfall, but forecasters are confident that snowfall will occur on Wednesday afternoon and evening. This event is expected to coincide with a new cold spell, with temperatures feeling as low as -9C in south Wales and northern England.
Meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth from the Met Office mentioned the potential for snow above approximately 100 meters in southern regions due to colder air mixing with a low-pressure system.
There are two likely scenarios, with the main one suggesting that the low-pressure system will move through the English Channel, bringing snow to south Wales, southern England, and heavy rain to parts of the southwest and south coast of England. The less likely scenario involves the low-pressure system shifting slightly northwards, leading to a snow risk in north Wales, the Midlands, and Northern Ireland, while southern parts of the UK are likely to experience heavy rain.
Most of the snowfall is expected to be concentrated in the Southwest of England, extending as far north as Herefordshire in the Midlands overnight. It may even reach areas like Surrey, with Exmoor and parts of Somerset expected to receive over five inches of snow within three hours.
The Met Office’s graphics outline the potential impact areas of the severe weather. One graphic depicts the expected snow coverage over large portions of the Southwest of England, the Home Counties, and south Wales.
Alternatively, another scenario suggests snow could extend further north into the Midlands, north Wales, and Northern Ireland, accompanied by stronger winds, particularly along the south coast and parts of Dorset on Wednesday night.
Thursday is expected to bring continued wet conditions, especially in southern England, with persisting cold temperatures, potentially dropping to -5C in northern England. This contrasts sharply with recent days where temperatures in Gosport, Hampshire, exceeded 11C.
