“Social Isolation in Teens Linked to Future Neet Status”

Date:

A recent study conducted by King’s College London has found that children who experience social isolation during their early secondary school years are more likely to become Neets by the age of 18. The research revealed that 12-year-olds who were the most isolated had over double the chances of being classified as Neet later on.

The study emphasized that children who were socially isolated and lonely at the age of 12 tended to remain isolated at 18, irrespective of their loneliness levels. Social isolation, in this context, referred to a lack of positive social relationships or having limited social networks with minimal interactions.

This study’s findings come in the wake of a report by former Labour Cabinet minister Alan Milburn, who cautioned about a potential £125 billion economic impact if actions are not taken to address the issue. New Prime Minister Andy Burnham has pledged to address the Neet crisis and has introduced new technical education pathways for 14-year-olds to combat this problem.

Researchers involved in the study highlighted that addressing social isolation during early adolescence could not only benefit young individuals but also lead to broader economic advantages by enhancing productivity. Dr. Bridget Bryan, the lead author of the study, stressed the long-term effects of social isolation on young people’s employment opportunities, emphasizing the importance of social skills, education, and mental well-being in navigating the job market.

Dr. Timothy Matthews, a co-author and psychology lecturer at the University of Greenwich, noted that loneliness does not necessarily prompt individuals to reconnect with others, especially among those most in need. Instead, loneliness and isolation can create a self-perpetuating cycle, where lack of social connections exacerbates feelings of loneliness, hindering efforts to re-engage socially.
