“Son of Drowning Victim Champions Water Safety Campaign”

Date:

A man lost his life in a tragic drowning incident while attempting to rescue the family dog from the sea. Robbie Jones, the son of the victim, Gareth Jones, has thrown his support behind The Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign. Gareth, aged 69, drowned within a minute of entering the waters off Hove, East Sussex, to save their young cockapoo, Connie.

Robbie, now 30, has taken on the role of a water safety advocate following the heartbreaking event, actively engaging with schools to raise awareness. Reflecting on his father’s untimely death, Robbie emphasized the profound impact it had on him, highlighting the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Having viewed CCTV footage of the incident, Robbie revealed the sequence of events leading to his father’s drowning. Gareth, a former head of the BBC’s HR department, was playing fetch with Connie on the beach when a series of unfortunate events unfolded, resulting in the fatal outcome.

Despite Gareth’s swimming proficiency and physical fitness, the swift and tragic nature of the incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers of the sea. Following an extensive search effort, Gareth’s body was discovered 18 miles away from the initial incident location, while Connie was found on Brighton Beach a day later.

Robbie’s advocacy work focuses on educating others about water safety measures, urging individuals not to endanger themselves by attempting risky rescues. Stressing the importance of contacting emergency services in such situations, Robbie emphasizes the need to rely on professional help and avoid putting oneself at risk.

Ashley Jones, Head of Water Safety and Education at the Royal Life Savers Society UK, echoed the sentiment, cautioning against impulsive rescue attempts that could lead to further tragedies. Instead, the emphasis is on seeking assistance from trained professionals and using safe methods to aid individuals or pets in distress.

The harrowing experience has left a lasting impact on Robbie and his family, underscoring the need for vigilance and adherence to safety protocols near water bodies. The ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign serves as a poignant reminder of the potential risks associated with water-related activities and the importance of prioritizing safety above all else.
