South West Water Ltd has acknowledged providing water contaminated with parasites to households, causing widespread illness. This incident, which occurred in 2024 in Brixham, Devon, led to hospitalizations and numerous cases of people falling ill with symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.
Following a plea of guilt under the Water Industry Act 1991, the company faces prosecution by the Drinking Water Inspectorate. Approximately 17,000 properties in the affected area were issued a “boil water” notice for up to eight weeks as a precaution.
Howard Leithead from the DWI emphasized the severity of the incident, citing its significant impact on public confidence in the water supply and the broader community. Despite a plea of guilt by South West Water, discussions arose regarding the appropriate court for sentencing, with the defense arguing for a district judge in the magistrates’ court.
District Judge Stuart Smith retained jurisdiction over the case, dismissing a request to move it to the crown court. The company, part of the Pennon group, estimated the total cost of the outbreak to be close to £40 million, including expenses for addressing the contamination issue and implementing restructuring programs.
Caroline Voaden, a Liberal Democrat MP, expressed disappointment over the company’s actions, highlighting the disconnect between their promises and the reality of the situation. She commended the efforts of campaigners and the Drinking Water Inspectorate for pursuing justice in the matter.
Marcus Rink, chief inspector of the Drinking Water Inspectorate, emphasized the gravity of the company’s failings in the Brixham incident, while Water minister Emma Hardy underscored the importance of accountability and transparency in such cases.
