Starmer Vows Action Against Extremism & Antisemitism

Date:

Keir Starmer has pledged to address the underlying causes of extremism and antisemitism in the wake of a terrorist assault on a Jewish community in north London.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need for increased funding to safeguard the security of Jewish individuals and expressed his intention to promptly visit Golders Green following the “horrific attack.” He also announced plans to convene with criminal justice agencies following an emergency Cobra meeting held earlier today.

Earlier today, two Jewish men, aged 76 and 34, were victims of a terrorist attack in the area. They are currently in stable condition at the hospital. Jewish leaders have called for stronger measures against anti-Semitic violence following the double stabbing incident at around 11:15 am, which has been classified as a terrorist attack.

In his remarks this evening, Mr. Starmer condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the victims, their families, and the affected community. He acknowledged the series of anti-Semitic incidents causing anxiety and distress and stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of extremism and anti-Semitism.

Following the afternoon Cobra meeting, which included key officials such as the Home Secretary, the London mayor, and the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, efforts to enhance security and coordinate the response were discussed.

Mr. Starmer also mentioned engaging with the Community Security Trust, emphasizing the need for increased funding to ensure adequate protection. He emphasized the necessity of tackling both state actors and addressing the fundamental issues of extremism and anti-Semitism.

The Prime Minister highlighted government actions related to security, cohesion, and extremism, acknowledging the anxiety within the Jewish community and pledging to ensure their safety and security. He reiterated the commitment to addressing the underlying causes of anti-Semitism and extremism.

Authorities are actively working to determine the nationality and background of the attacker involved in Wednesday’s incident. The suspect, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, remains in custody after receiving medical evaluation at the hospital, according to Metropolitan Police chief Sir Mark Rowley.
