Three students have been convicted of recording themselves committing a violent act against a man they suspected of being a child abuser and then sharing the footage on social media. The trio, consisting of two boys and a girl, engaged with Alexander Cashford, 49, luring him to a beach in Leysdown-on-Sea, Kent, where they viciously attacked him with rocks and glass bottles.
The incident unfolded after Mr. Cashford met the girl at an amusement arcade and exchanged contact information. Subsequently, the students, aged 15 and 16, messaged Mr. Cashford under the guise of a fictitious persona, leading him to the ill-fated meeting at the beach. The girl’s active participation in the assault was captured on video, where she can be heard inciting the boys to harm the victim.
Eyewitnesses described the brutal attack, with the 16-year-old boy striking Mr. Cashford and the group pelting him with rocks before kicking him while he was down. Despite attempts by bystanders to intervene, the students continued their assault, hurling derogatory remarks at the victim.
The Crown Prosecution Service indicated that all three defendants were jointly responsible for the murder under the concept of joint enterprise. The prosecutor emphasized the pivotal role of the video footage in showcasing the girl’s encouragement of the violence and aggression.
The court proceedings revealed that the students meticulously planned and executed the attack on Mr. Cashford, who was unaware of their intentions. Following the tragic incident, the defendants now face life-altering consequences as they await sentencing, scheduled for April.
Det Chief Insp Neil Kimber commented on the case, highlighting the potential consequences of reckless actions among young individuals. Meanwhile, it was disclosed that Mr. Cashford, an only child residing with his parents, had a history of prior legal issues before succumbing to the fatal assault conducted by the students.
