“Study: Avoiding Key Risk Factors in Midlife Cuts Dementia Odds”

Avoiding certain risk factors in middle age may significantly reduce the likelihood of developing dementia, according to recent research. A study that monitored 12,409 individuals aged 55 without dementia for an average of 26 years focused on high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and smoking as key factors. The research revealed that individuals free of all three risk factors lived approximately 30.1 years longer without disease, compared to 26.3 years for those with one risk factor, 21 years for those with two, and just over 17 years for those with all three. Steering clear of these risk factors entirely could potentially add an extra 13 dementia-free years to one’s life.

Dr. Josef Coresh, in collaboration with a team from New York University’s Langone Health Optimal Aging Institute, emphasized the importance of actively avoiding these risk factors in midlife to preserve brain health for over a decade. The study, published in Neurology, also noted that women tended to live longer without dementia than men, and white individuals generally had more dementia-free years than black individuals, irrespective of their risk factor profiles.

Dr. Jacqui Hanley from Alzheimer’s Research UK commented on the study, highlighting the significance of focusing on the duration of living free from dementia. She stressed the importance of maintaining heart health alongside brain health, as conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking not only increase the risk of dementia but also raise the likelihood of premature death from other ailments. The Think Brain Health campaign by Alzheimer’s Research UK encourages individuals to adopt habits such as physical activity, non-smoking, and managing cardiovascular conditions to promote overall health and potentially reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

While there is no foolproof method to prevent dementia, addressing risk factors related to poor cardiovascular health, as indicated by this study, may play a vital role in lowering the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in the long run.
