“Study: Vitamin D Supplements offer limited fall protection”

Date:

A recent scientific review has found that vitamin D supplements do not offer significant protection against falls and fractures in the elderly. Despite the NHS recommendation for people in the UK to take these supplements during the darker months to support bone health, the review of 69 clinical trials involving over 150,000 individuals concluded that there was minimal impact on fracture risk.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal, indicated that both vitamin D and calcium supplements showed little to no effect in preventing fractures. The research team from Quebec, Canada, highlighted that falls and fractures are common among older adults, with hospital admissions for fractures often leading to functional decline.

While vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining bone, teeth, and muscle health, the review suggested that supplementation did not significantly reduce the risk of specific fractures like hip fractures or falls in general. The paper noted that these findings might not be applicable to individuals with specific bone conditions or osteoporosis.

Experts emphasized the importance of other interventions such as exercise, particularly resistance training, to enhance muscle and bone strength. They also recommended home hazard assessments to prevent falls. Olivier Massé, a pharmacy expert involved in the study, advised redirecting efforts and resources towards proven interventions rather than supplementation.

The study also raised concerns about the potential bias in previous observational studies that suggested a link between vitamin D supplements and reduced fall and fracture risks. The NHS highlighted that while sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, the UK’s limited sunlight exposure during certain months necessitates alternative sources like food or supplements.

To ensure adequate calcium intake, a balanced diet rich in dairy, leafy greens, and fortified foods is recommended. In cases where supplementation is necessary, healthcare providers often prescribe combined Calcium and Vitamin D tablets to support bone health and prevent osteoporosis.
