“Surgeon Removed from Medical Register After Botched Operation”

Date:

A surgeon who performed a botched operation resulting in the patient’s organs being improperly connected, leading to a life-threatening situation, has been removed from the medical register.

Dr. Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman, a locum surgeon in the NHS, conducted an urgent bowel procedure on a young man, which was so poorly executed that it was deemed “incompatible with life” by a tribunal.

The patient’s bowels were incorrectly redirected back into his stomach instead of following the normal digestive route due to the surgeon’s errors, creating a dangerous “closed loop” system that posed a severe risk to his life, as noted by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS).

Following the surgery, the patient experienced severe pain and had to undergo a second emergency operation performed by another surgeon to correct the mistake and save his life, according to the MPTS misconduct hearing held in Manchester.

Despite concerns raised by the patient’s parents and other medical staff, Dr. Rahman failed to acknowledge any surgical mishap during the procedure, as revealed in the tribunal.

An expert witness from the General Medical Council described Dr. Rahman’s procedure as unprecedented and classified his mistake as one of the worst possible in the field.

Dr. Rahman, who graduated in 1993 from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, did not participate in the hearing and had no legal representation.

He claimed to have been unfairly targeted and denied responsibility for the operation at the Royal Oldham Hospital in August 2020, where he was working as a locum.

The MPTS had previously restricted his medical practice in July of the following year, but Dr. Rahman violated the terms by securing a locum position at Affidea Express Care Clinic in Ireland in February 2022, further aggravating his misconduct, as stated by the tribunal.

In a recent ruling, the tribunal decided that Dr. Rahman’s actions were fundamentally incompatible with maintaining his medical registration, leading to his removal from the profession.
